Why
do some people accomplish things with ease while others struggle even though they both may
have identical
natural abilities?
The answer is maddeningly simple: when a human being thinks he or she can do something,
they can. When
someone thinks that they cannot do something, they cannot. It's
just
the way people are designed.
Now, you might ask, why would anyone choose to think they can't do something knowing that
this very way of thinking
assures their failure or guarantees their limitation?
The answer is that people generally think they have no choice other than to be some
version of who they have been
in the past. Most of us believe that our attitudes thoughts,
limitations and freedoms are almost a physical part of us.
Something solid and
immovable. When people think "I am good at sports,"
it is no
coincidence that they are.
When people think "I am shy around people and there is nothing I can do about
it", it should surprise no one that they
are shy and that there is nothing they
can do about it as long as they continue to believe so.
People who think they are afraid of public
speaking are afraid of public speaking and those who think they are great
have
great oratory gifts perform magnificently and inspire and move others to action.
On the other hand, when people think "I
can do whatever I set my mind to" they literally become unstoppable.
Whatever we truly believe about ourselves is
precisely how we think, feel and behave. The answer to the koan "which
came first the
chicken or the egg?" is that neither did. What came first was the idea of a chicken
or an egg. Reality
is always hatched from the idea of what is possible.
